When the same device must capture both nearby objects and more distant scenes, one fixed setting may not keep every target clear. The IMX258 Auto Focus Camera Module is designed for this type of variable-distance imaging requirement.

Before choosing an autofocus module, the nearest and farthest working distances should be confirmed first. Target size, required focusing speed and the amount of movement in the scene will also affect the final result. If the target always stays in one position, a fixed-focus module may provide a simpler solution. Autofocus becomes more valuable when the target distance changes during normal use or when one device must handle several capture distances.

Autofocus performance also depends on more than the image sensor. The lens, VCM, focus driver, host control and mechanical installation must work together. A module that focuses correctly during an open-board test may behave differently after it is installed behind the customer's cover glass or inside a restricted enclosure.
