Barrel Distortion, Fisheye Effect or Vignetting? How to Evaluate a Camera Module Lens

A wide field of view does not automatically make a camera lens a fisheye lens, and a telephoto lens does not automatically produce one fixed type of distortion. These terms describe different image behaviors. Mixing them can lead to the wrong lens choice, an unsuitable correction plan or inconsistent specifications between a lens supplier and a camera module integrator.

The practical question is not simply whether a lens is wide-angle or telephoto. It is whether its field of view, projection, edge geometry and illumination match the device task.

Four terms that should not be treated as the same problem

Vignetting is a brightness-uniformity issue. The image center remains brighter while the corners become darker. It may come from the optical design, insufficient image circle, lens-to-sensor chief-ray-angle mismatch, a filter or housing that blocks marginal rays, or other mechanical limits.

Barrel distortion is a geometric effect in which magnification decreases toward the edge. Straight lines near the image boundary appear to bow outward. It is often seen in wide-angle designs, but it is not unavoidable.

Pincushion distortion is the opposite geometric tendency: magnification increases toward the edge, so boundary lines bend inward toward the image center. Some telephoto or zoom-lens positions are more likely to show it, but focal length alone is not proof.

A fisheye lens uses a non-rectilinear projection to place an extremely wide scene into the image. Its curved rendering is largely a projection characteristic, not simply a badly corrected conventional wide-angle lens.

Why wide-angle does not automatically mean 'positive distortion'

For a given sensor size, a shorter focal length generally produces a wider field of view. Distortion describes something different: how image magnification changes from the center toward the edge. Lens element shapes, spacing, aperture position, sensor format and the intended projection all influence that change.

A wide-angle lens may therefore show barrel distortion, very low distortion, or a deliberate fisheye projection. A telephoto lens may show pincushion distortion, low distortion or another corrected profile. 'Wide-angle equals barrel' and 'telephoto equals pincushion' are useful tendencies to remember, but they are not specifications.

The sign also needs context. Under a common TV-distortion definition, barrel distortion is normally reported as a negative percentage because the measured image height near the edge is smaller than the ideal image height. Pincushion distortion is normally positive. Some calibration or correction software may present coefficients using a different direction or mapping. Always confirm the formula, test chart and measurement position before comparing numbers.

What should be checked before selecting the lens?

Sensor model and active image size: the same lens can produce a different field of view and corner performance on another sensor format.

Required horizontal, vertical and diagonal FOV: a diagonal value alone may hide whether the useful width or height is sufficient.

Working distance and target size: these determine how much of the frame the actual object occupies.

Allowable distortion and projection type: decide whether straight lines must remain straight or whether wider coverage is more important.

Corner illumination and mechanical envelope: verify the image circle, lens holder, filter, cover window and enclosure together.

Correction path: confirm whether the host ISP or software can apply dewarping or lens-shading correction, and what crop, edge stretching, processing load or resolution loss it introduces.

Select the lens by the device task, not by one label

Low distortion is important when the device measures dimensions, detects straight edges, stitches images or depends on stable geometry. A wider or fisheye projection may be more useful when scene coverage and situational awareness matter more than edge shape. Likewise, slight corner fall-off may be acceptable in a preview camera but unsuitable when the entire frame is used for inspection or recognition.

Before requesting a lens or camera module sample, define the sensor, target FOV, working distance, object size, maximum acceptable distortion, corner-brightness requirement and available correction method. Those conditions make a lens specification meaningful and allow the sample to be evaluated against the real project rather than against a general label such as 'wide-angle'.
