Camera Module with IR-CUT Switch: Day and Night Imaging Design

Day/night cameras need two different spectral behaviors

A daytime color image benefits from blocking much of the near-infrared energy that would otherwise shift color and reduce natural rendering. At night, the same blocking filter can prevent an IR illuminator from helping the sensor. An IR-CUT switch addresses this conflict by moving an optical filter in or out of the light path.

The switch changes more than sensitivity

Removing the filter increases NIR response, but it can also shift focus because visible and infrared wavelengths do not focus at exactly the same plane in many lenses. A lens designed for day/night operation should keep both spectral bands within acceptable focus. If not, the night image can look soft even though it is brighter.

This is why a day/night module should be tested with the final lens, not only the sensor and filter mechanism.

What to Confirm Before Ordering Camera Module Samples

Mechanical space and switching reliability matter

An IR-CUT assembly adds moving parts, height and electrical control. In compact embedded products, the mechanism may become the tallest part near the lens. The design must also manage repeated switching over product life.

If the camera sits behind a narrow bezel or small shell, confirm that the filter assembly and lens do not conflict with the enclosure.

Why Cable Length Matters in Camera Module Integration

Decide how the product knows when to switch

Some systems use an ambient-light sensor, some use image brightness, and others switch based on time or host command. Each approach can produce different behavior around dusk. Rapid toggling near a threshold is undesirable, so hysteresis or timing logic may be needed.

The camera module may provide the actuator, but the final switching strategy often belongs to system firmware.

IR illumination and filter control must be coordinated

Night mode is useful only if the system has enough NIR energy or natural low-light sensitivity. If IR LEDs turn on before the filter is removed, the image may remain dark. If the filter is removed in bright daytime, color can shift. Coordinate illumination and filter timing in the host or module firmware.

Current module catalogues show several day/night implementations

SincereFirst's USB and FPC lists include modules marked with IR-CUT switching or IR-filter-related configurations. These should be reviewed model by model because the sensor, lens, actuator, filter and control wiring differ. A generic 'IR-CUT camera module' description is not enough for an OEM design.

Validation should include transition behavior

Test bright daylight, indoor light, twilight, complete darkness with IR illumination and repeated day/night switching. Check color, focus, exposure recovery, switching noise and actuator reliability. The transition between modes is part of the product experience, not a secondary detail.

Example: parking or entrance camera crossing dusk

At sunset, ambient light can fluctuate around the switch threshold for several minutes. Without hysteresis, the filter mechanism may move repeatedly between day and night modes. A product-level control strategy can delay switching, average light readings or require a stable threshold before actuating.

The mechanical filter is only one part of a good day/night design; the decision logic determines user-visible stability.

Focus validation should cover both spectral states

Set up targets at several distances and compare sharpness with the IR-CUT filter inserted under visible light and removed under IR illumination. If the night image softens significantly, the lens or focus position may not be sufficiently corrected for NIR. This test is more revealing than checking brightness alone.

FAQ

Why does night mode sometimes become blurry after IR-CUT removal?

Visible and NIR wavelengths can focus differently. A day/night-compatible lens and correct focus setup are needed.

Can software white balance replace an IR-CUT filter in daytime?

Not completely. NIR contamination changes the spectral signal reaching the sensor; software correction has limits.

Who controls the IR-CUT switch?

Depending on the module, the host or camera board may control it. The trigger logic should be defined and validated for the final product.
