OmniVision Launches Industry-First 5MP Automotive-Grade Global Shutter Sensor, Upgrades Cockpit Monitoring Module Tech

Recently, OmniVision, a provider of semiconductor imaging solutions, released the OX05C sensor dedicated to automotive cockpits. As the industry's first 5-megapixel (5MP) backside-illuminated (BSI) global shutter (GS) high dynamic range (HDR) product, its technological breakthroughs will directly drive the performance upgrading and scenario adaptability enhancement of in-vehicle cockpit monitoring camera modules, providing key support for the safe implementation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

In terms of core parameters and technical features, the OX05C sensor specifically addresses the multi-environment adaptation challenges of cockpit monitoring. Designed with a 2.2µm pixel size and integrated with OmniVision's Nyxel® near-infrared (NIR) technology, it achieves industry-leading quantum efficiency at a wavelength of 940nm. This significantly enhances imaging clarity in low-light scenarios such as tunnels and nighttime, ensuring accurate capture of the driver's facial features and passenger status. The combination of global shutter and HDR functions breaks through the limitations of traditional rolling shutters-not only avoiding facial overexposure in strong light environments like direct sunlight, but also resisting interference from other infrared light sources inside the cockpit. Coupled with TV distortion control capabilities, it provides the module with true, undistorted panoramic images of the cockpit.

In terms of module integration and commercial adaptation, the design optimizations of the OX05C further lower the implementation threshold for automakers. Its package size is reduced by 30% compared to the previous generation, with a compact specification of only 6.61mm × 5.34mm. This allows the camera module to be flexibly embedded in narrow spaces such as cockpit rearview mirrors and A-pillars, adapting to the interior design needs of different vehicle models. More importantly, the sensor supports shared lenses with the previous-generation OX05B, and reduces reliance on dedicated Image Signal Processors (ISPs) through on-chip RGB-IR separation. This directly helps module manufacturers lower hardware replacement costs and development complexity. Additionally, the sensor integrates cybersecurity features and supports simultaneous dual monitoring of drivers and passengers via a single module, further optimizing system space and cost structure.

Industry insiders point out that cockpit monitoring, as a core component of the ADAS safety system, is evolving toward the direction of "high resolution + full-environment adaptation + miniaturization." Dr. Paul Wu, Director of Automotive Product Marketing at OmniVision, emphasized that the launch of the OX05C marks a major breakthrough in DMS/OMS (Driver Monitoring System/Occupant Monitoring System) camera technology. Its ability to capture images without fading under strong light and accurately identify fatigue status can directly improve the reliability of driving safety algorithms. Detlef Wilke, Vice President of Innovation at Smart Eye, also stated that the sensor's multi-environment adaptability and miniaturized design provide automakers with more flexible module deployment solutions.

Currently, the OX05C is available for sample supply in both RGB-IR color and monochrome versions, with mass production expected in 2026. As the penetration rate of automotive intelligence continues to rise, market demand for cockpit monitoring modules keeps expanding. OmniVision's latest technological breakthrough is likely to accelerate the popularization of high-pixel, high-protection-level modules. Meanwhile, it sets a benchmark for integrated "sensor-algorithm-package" solutions in the industry, driving in-vehicle imaging modules toward a safer and more efficient development direction.
