What is fixed focus camera module?

Introduction

Not all camera modules need moving lenses to take sharp pictures. Many of the most reliable and widely used cameras have no moving parts at all. They use a fixed focus design. A fixed focus camera module is set to a specific focal distance during manufacturing and stays there. It doesn't adjust automatically or manually. This simplicity makes it the preferred choice for countless applications-from medical endoscopy to automotive safety and embedded projects. At Sincere, we've been manufacturing camera modules for over 30 years, and fixed focus is a core part of our product range. This article explains what fixed focus is, how it works, and where it's used.

What Is a Fixed Focus Camera Module?

A fixed focus camera module has its lens permanently locked at a specific focus distance. Unlike autofocus modules, it has no moving parts. The lens is glued or mechanically fixed during assembly. The camera relies on a large depth of field (DOF) to keep objects sharp over a wide range of distances.

In a cmos module camera with fixed focus, the lens is typically set to the hyperfocal distance-the point where everything from half that distance to infinity appears acceptably sharp. For example, a lens set to 1 meter gives sharp images from about 50 cm to infinity.

How Fixed Focus Works

The key is depth of field. DOF depends on:

  • Aperture: Smaller apertures (higher f-numbers) increase DOF.
  • Focal length: Shorter focal lengths (wide-angle) increase DOF.
  • Sensor size: Smaller sensors increase DOF.

Fixed focus modules are designed with these parameters to maximize the usable focusing range. They don't need to move because the DOF covers the expected working distances.

Advantages

1. Simplicity and Reliability
No moving parts means nothing to break or wear out. A fixed focus raspberry pi camera module will work for years without calibration. Critical for industrial and medical applications.

2. Smaller Size
Autofocus mechanisms add thickness. A fixed focus module is thinner and lighter. For an esp32 camera module used in compact IoT devices, fixed focus is often the only practical choice.

3. Lower Cost
Fewer components and simpler assembly mean lower cost. A fixed focus camera hd module is significantly cheaper than an equivalent autofocus model.

4. Lower Power Consumption
No motors means zero power draw for focusing. Essential for battery-powered devices.

5. Faster Startup
No focus hunting. The image is sharp as soon as the sensor powers on.

6. Shock and Vibration Resistance
Moving parts can be damaged by drops or vibration. Fixed focus modules are rugged, ideal for automotive and drone applications.

Disadvantages

1. Limited Close-Up Ability
Fixed focus modules have a minimum focusing distance. Objects closer than that will be blurry.

2. Compromised Sharpness at Extremes
Sharpness is optimized at one distance. Objects at the near and far limits of the DOF may be slightly softer.

3. Not Suitable for Variable Distances
If you need to focus at very different distances-like 5 cm and 10 meters-fixed focus may not work.

Applications

Medical Endoscopy
Working distance is known and fixed. A best camera module for endoscopy often uses fixed focus because there's no room for moving parts.

Automotive
Most automotive camera module designs use fixed focus. Rearview cameras and ADAS cameras rely on large DOF. An automotive inspection camera for service bays may also use fixed focus for simplicity.

Raspberry Pi and Embedded Projects
A raspberry pi camera module is almost always fixed focus. Affordable, easy to use, and sharp enough for most projects. The official Raspberry Pi camera modules have been fixed focus for years.

ESP32 and IoT Cameras
An esp32 camera module is typically fixed focus. These tiny, low-power modules are used in smart home devices and remote monitoring. Fixed focus keeps cost and size down.

Security and Surveillance
Many indoor and outdoor security cameras use fixed focus to cover a room or driveway.

USB Webcams
Basic webcams use fixed focus to keep costs low.

Fixed Focus vs. Autofocus

Feature Fixed Focus Autofocus
Moving parts None Yes
Size Smaller Larger
Cost Lower Higher
Power Lower Higher
Close-up Limited Excellent
Best for Known working distance Variable distance

Choosing a Fixed Focus Module

When selecting a fixed focus camera hd module, consider:

  • Working distance: Ensure DOF covers your range.
  • Resolution: 1080p is standard; 4K available but may have shallower DOF.
  • Sensor size: Smaller sensors give larger DOF.
  • Aperture: Smaller aperture increases DOF but reduces light.
  • Interface: USB for computers, MIPI for Raspberry Pi, SPI for ESP32.

When to Choose Fixed Focus

Working distance is known and consistent

Need small size and low power

Reliability and durability are critical

On a tight budget

Building an embedded system (Raspberry Pi, ESP32, etc.)

Summary

A fixed focus camera module has a permanently set lens. It relies on depth of field to keep objects sharp over a wide range. Advantages: simplicity, reliability, small size, low cost, low power. Disadvantages: limited close-up ability, compromises at extremes.

Fixed focus is ideal for medical endoscopy, automotive cameras, Raspberry Pi projects, ESP32 IoT devices, and basic security cameras. Not suitable for applications requiring close-up detail or varying distances.

At Sincere, we help clients choose between fixed focus and autofocus for their cmos module camera needs. Whether you need a raspberry pi camera module, an esp32 camera module, or a camera hd module for industrial inspection, contact us to discuss your requirements.
