What is image stabilization?

Introduction

Have you ever taken a video while walking, only to find it blurry or shaky? That's camera movement. Image stabilization is technology that reduces blur caused by hand shake, vibration, or motion. It is essential for handheld endoscopes, drones, robotic arms, and automotive cameras. At Sincere, we have manufactured cmos module camera solutions for over 30 years, including small camera module and usb camera module designs with stabilization features. This article explains what image stabilization is, how it works, and where it is used.

What Is Image Stabilization?

Image stabilization (IS) compensates for unwanted camera motion to produce sharper images and smoother video. Two main types:

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS): Hardware‑based. The lens or sensor moves physically to counteract movement.

Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS): Software‑based. The camera crops the image and uses algorithms to smooth motion.

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
OIS uses a floating lens element or moving sensor. Gyroscopes detect motion, and tiny actuators shift the lens/sensor in the opposite direction. Advantages: no loss of resolution, effective for larger movements. Disadvantages: adds size, weight, cost – difficult for small camera module designs.

Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)
EIS uses software. The camera captures a wider field of view, then crops and shifts frames to keep the subject steady. Advantages: no moving parts, lower cost, easy to implement. Disadvantages: crops the image (reduces FOV), less effective for large movements.

OIS vs. EIS

Feature OIS EIS
Moving parts Yes No
Resolution loss None Cropping reduces resolution
Effectiveness Good for large movements Good for small vibrations
Cost Higher Lower
Size Larger Compact
Best for Handheld cameras, high‑end video Drones, action cameras, webcams

Stabilization by Module Type

Small Camera Module – Used in medical endoscopes or drones. OIS is rarely possible (actuator too large). Relies on EIS or host‑based stabilization. Some modules output gyroscope data for post‑processing.

USB Camera Module – For webcams or inspection. Most do not have built‑in EIS; host software (Zoom, Teams) performs stabilization. Industrial usb camera module on tripods may not need stabilization.

Camera HD Module / HD Camera Module – For action cameras or handheld devices. Often includes EIS. Premium modules may include OIS. Drone‑mounted HD Camera Module typically uses EIS (OIS too heavy).

CSI Camera Module – MIPI CSI‑2 for Raspberry Pi, Jetson. Rarely include OIS (size/cost). EIS implemented in software on the host processor. Standard for robotics and drones.

CMOS Module Camera – Any cmos module camera can support EIS if ISP/host has capability. OIS requires specific hardware. Most industrial modules are mounted on fixed fixtures, so stabilization is not needed.

Applications Needing Stabilization

Application Why Stabilization Matters
Handheld endoscope Surgeon's hand shake – EIS helps
Drone / aerial inspection Motor vibration – EIS essential
Action camera Walking, running – OIS or EIS
Automotive (ADAS) Road vibration – usually mount‑stabilized
Robotic arm inspection Arm movement – EIS or software
Consumer webcam User movement – EIS in software

Sincere's Approach

At Sincere, we help clients choose OIS or EIS based on size, cost, and performance:

  • Small camera module – Recommend EIS on host processor (Raspberry Pi, Jetson) to save space.
  • Usb camera module – Provide modules with gyroscope data output for host‑based EIS.
  • Camera hd module / HD Camera Module – Can integrate OIS for high‑end handheld devices where space permits.
  • Csi camera module – Work with clients to implement software stabilization.
  • Cmos module camera – All modules can be paired with EIS algorithms.

Summary

Image stabilization reduces blur from camera movement. OIS uses moving lens elements – effective but larger and costlier. EIS uses software cropping – compact and low‑cost but reduces FOV. For small camera module designs (endoscopes, drones), EIS is the practical choice. For usb camera module or csi camera module with powerful processors, software stabilization is easy. When choosing a HD Camera Module for a handheld device, consider whether OIS is worth the added size and cost.
