Sony IMX742: 1 mm Image Sensor Enables 5 m Digital Video For Thin Endoscopes

On October 22, 2026, Sony Semiconductor Solutions announced the IMX742 for single-use medical endoscopes, with sample shipments planned for November. The back-illuminated sensor provides approximately 0.51 MP (720 × 720) in a 1 × 1 mm chip.

Small Size Is Only Half the Challenge

In thin bronchoscopes and ureteroscopes, the camera competes with illumination, wiring and mechanical components for limited tip space. Sony integrates A/D conversion into the sensor and uses six pins. Its bidirectional link carries both video and control signals over one cable.

Why the 5 m Cable Matters

Long, narrow wiring can complicate image transmission even when the sensor itself performs well. Sony reports stable digital output through a 5 m AWG44 cable in its evaluation environment. On-sensor digitization also reduces noise compared with analog output, especially useful under limited LED illumination. A 60 fps mode supports smoother viewing of moving scenes.

What Should Engineers Verify?

Before selecting an IMX742-based camera design, check the available tip diameter, lens and LED space, working distance, cable routing, host compatibility and required frame rate. Sony's 5 m result is a test condition-not a guarantee for every cable or device.

The takeaway for camera module selection is clear: sensor size, signal transmission and illumination must be evaluated together to deliver reliable imaging in a compact system.
