Introduction
Most camera modules connect via USB or MIPI. But industrial machine vision, outdoor surveillance, and factory automation often need much longer cables – sometimes 50 metres or more. GigE Camera Module technology solves this. GigE (Gigabit Ethernet) camera modules send video over standard Ethernet cables, providing high bandwidth, long distance, and Power over Ethernet (PoE). At Sincere, we manufacture cmos module camera solutions for over 30 years, including embedded vision camera module designs with GigE interface.
What Is a GigE Camera Module?
A GigE Camera Module is a camera module that outputs video over Gigabit Ethernet. It contains a cmos module camera sensor, an ISP, and an Ethernet PHY. The video streams using the GigE Vision protocol – an industry standard for industrial cameras. The camera can be placed up to 100 metres from the host computer with standard Cat5e/Cat6 cable.
Unlike USB (limited to 3–5 metres) or MIPI (under 30 cm), GigE is built for remote imaging.
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Cable length | Up to 100 metres |
| Bandwidth | 1 Gbps – enough for 4K video at 30 fps |
| Power | PoE – single cable for data and power |
| Protocol | GigE Vision – interoperable with many software packages |
| Latency | Moderate (acceptable for machine vision) |
| Cost | Cables and connectors are cheap |
GigE vs. USB vs. MIPI
| Feature | GigE | USB 3.0 | MIPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max cable length | 100 m | 3–5 m | <30 cm |
| Bandwidth | 1 Gbps | 5 Gbps | Up to 6 Gbps |
| Power over cable | Yes (PoE) | No | No |
| Plug‑and‑play | Requires driver | UVC – yes | No |
| Best for | Factory automation, long distances | PC‑connected | Embedded, low‑power |
Why Choose GigE?
- Long Cable Lengths – A GigE Camera Module can be 100 metres away. Perfect for factory floors where the camera is on a remote machine.
- PoE (Power over Ethernet) – One cable carries both data and power. No separate power supply – reduces cabling.
- Standard Protocols – GigE Vision is supported by machine vision libraries (Halcon, OpenCV). Easier integration than proprietary interfaces.
- High Bandwidth for 4K – A 4k camera module at 30 fps needs about 1 Gbps raw bandwidth – GigE matches it perfectly. For 60 fps, 10 GigE or USB 3.0 is better.
- Industrial Reliability – Ethernet has error detection and correction. Stable for a hd camera module used in quality control.
Applications
Factory automation – Inspecting products on long production lines.
Traffic monitoring – License plate recognition cameras above motorways.
Security surveillance – Outdoor PoE cameras.
Medical imaging – Stationary devices (microscopes, dental scanners).
Embedded vision – An embedded vision camera module with GigE for robots where the processor is not attached to the camera.
How to Choose
| Requirement | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Cable length <10 m, simple | USB 3.0 is cheaper |
| Length 10–100 m | GigE Camera Module |
| 4K @ 30fps | 4k camera module with GigE |
| 4K @ 60fps | 10 GigE or USB 3.0 |
| PoE needed | Ensure module supports IEEE 802.3af/at |
| Harsh environment | Rugged housing, locking Ethernet connector |
Sincere's GigE Camera Modules
At Sincere, we design cmos module camera based GigE modules:
GigE Camera Module – GigE Vision compliant, PoE option.
Camera module – Custom designs with Sony IMX sensors.
Hd camera module – 1080p @ 60fps over GigE.
Embedded vision camera module – Low‑power, ruggedized for drones and robotics.
4k camera module – 4K @ 30fps, industrial connectors.
Cmos module camera – High sensitivity sensors.
Limitations of GigE
Higher latency than MIPI (but fine for machine vision).
Uses more CPU than a direct MIPI connection.
Needs driver setup (not plug‑and‑play).
More complex than USB for simple applications.
Summary
A GigE Camera Module is the best choice when you need long cable lengths (up to 100 m), PoE, and industrial reliability. It outperforms USB in distance and handles 4K @ 30fps easily. An embedded vision camera module with GigE works well when the processor is far from the camera. Compared to a standard hd camera module with USB, GigE adds complexity but offers greater reach. All our modules use high‑quality cmos module camera sensors.
