What is NIR camera module?

Introduction

Most cameras capture the light we see – the visible spectrum (400–700 nm). But there is another world just beyond: near‑infrared (NIR) (700–1000 nm). A NIR camera module is designed to detect this invisible light, enabling imaging in very low light or total darkness (with IR illumination). These modules are essential for night vision, security, medical imaging, agriculture, and industrial inspection. At Sincere, we manufacture cmos module camera solutions for over 30 years, including Night Vision Camera Module designs.

What Is a NIR Camera Module?
A NIR camera module is a Camera Module with enhanced sensitivity to near‑infrared wavelengths. Standard cameras have an IR‑cut filter that blocks NIR to keep colours accurate. A NIR camera either removes that filter permanently or uses a switchable filter (ICR). Some are day/night cameras with a movable IR‑cut filter.

Key components:

A cmos module camera sensor with good NIR sensitivity (e.g., Sony IMX290, IMX307).

A lens that transmits NIR light.

Optional: IR‑cut filter removable (ICR) mechanism.

IR LEDs for active illumination.

How NIR Imaging Works
Near‑infrared light behaves similarly to visible light but can penetrate thin plastics, fog, and smoke. It is also reflected differently by living tissue and vegetation. A NIR camera module captures this invisible light. With an IR illuminator (850 nm or 940 nm LEDs), it can see in complete darkness – hence Night Vision Camera Module.

Unlike thermal imaging (which detects heat), NIR imaging still needs some illumination – either ambient (moonlight, streetlights contain NIR) or active (IR LEDs). The result is a black‑and‑white image.

NIR vs. Standard Camera

Feature Standard Camera NIR Camera Module
IR‑cut filter Fixed (blocks NIR) Removed or switchable
Daytime colour Excellent Poor (reddish cast)
Night vision None Yes (with IR light)
Best for General photography Security, low‑light surveillance

Low‑Light Imaging vs. Night Vision

Low‑Light Imaging – Camera works in dim visible light (moonlight) without IR. A hd camera module with large pixels and high sensitivity performs well here.

Near-Infrared Imaging – Uses NIR light. Can work in total darkness if you supply IR illumination.

Night Vision Camera Module – Combines good low‑light performance with a switchable IR‑cut filter and IR LEDs.

Applications

  • Security and Surveillance – Most outdoor security cameras are Night Vision Camera Module designs. Daytime: IR‑cut filter gives colour. Night: filter retracts, IR LEDs illuminate – clear black‑and‑white video.
  • Industrial Inspection – NIR sees through smoke, fog, or thin plastics. Used to inspect contents of opaque containers or check seals.
  • Medical Imaging – NIR penetrates skin, helping with vein detection (venipuncture), pulse oximetry, and some endoscopy.
  • Agriculture – Healthy plants reflect NIR differently from stressed ones. Drones with NIR cameras assess crop health and irrigation needs.
  • Machine Vision – NIR distinguishes materials that look identical under visible light (e.g., different plastics). Used in automated sorting.
  • Biometrics – Some face recognition systems use NIR illumination to work in darkness and avoid spoofing with printed photos.

Choosing a NIR Camera Module

Requirement Recommended Features
Daytime colour + night vision Switchable IR‑cut filter (ICR), IR LEDs at 850 nm
Pure NIR (no colour) Fixed NIR‑pass filter
Low‑light only (no IR) High‑sensitivity hd camera module, large pixels
Covert night vision (no red glow) 940 nm IR LEDs (invisible to human eye)
Long‑range night vision 850 nm IR LEDs (brighter, slight red glow)

Sensitivity and Resolution
A cmos module camera with good NIR sensitivity is essential. Sony's Starvis sensors (IMX290, IMX307) have excellent NIR response. For Near-Infrared Imaging, 1080p (2MP) is typical because NIR scatters more than visible light – higher resolution may not add useful detail. A hd camera module (720p or 1080p) is sufficient for most night vision.

Sincere's NIR Camera Modules

At Sincere, we design and manufacture cmos module camera solutions for NIR and night vision:

  • NIR camera module – Fixed NIR‑pass or switchable ICR, 720p/1080p/4K.
  • Camera Module – Custom designs with Sony IMX sensors optimised for NIR.
  • Low-Light Imaging – High‑sensitivity modules for dim visible light.
  • Hd camera module – 1080p NIR modules for security and industrial.
  • Near-Infrared Imaging – Dedicated NIR modules with 850 nm or 940 nm LEDs.
  • Night Vision Camera Module – Complete day/night cameras with ICR and IR LEDs.
  • Cmos module camera – All modules built on reliable CMOS sensors.

Summary

A NIR camera module is a Camera Module specialised for near‑infrared light. It enables Low-Light Imaging and true Night Vision Camera Module capability when paired with IR illumination. Applications include security, industrial inspection, medical imaging, agriculture, and machine vision. A hd camera module with a switchable IR‑cut filter gives you both colour day and black‑and‑white night. Understanding Near-Infrared Imaging helps you select the right sensor, lens, and illuminator for your project.
